Hey, Tanning Beds Aren't Good For You

Okay, even though we all know that increasing our exposure to the sun or to indoor UV rays through the use of a tanning bed is not goof for our skin, yet many of us feel it is the best way to get a quick appearance boost. Nothing glows quite like a new tan. Am I right?
Yet simply replacing just a few tanning sessions each month could really pay off over time. You may not notice the effects of increased aging yet because you're young, but over time all the extra hours of UV exposure build up. I can't see any good reason to choose to expose myself to more UV ray than I have to. In fact it seems there are many reasons to avoid exposure to UV rays.
Yet I do still like that tanned look. The good news is that sunless tanning products and services have come a long way over the years. Be careful about which sunless tanning ingredients you use though, as most of the newer compounds have undergone far too little testing to be considered safe for using on your skin.
DHA is the traditional sunless tanning active ingredient and can be found in many kinds of sunless tanning products today. It is the only sunless tanning compound that has been around for more than a couple decades and though it has not been tested exhaustively, the general consensus is that it has yet to show any negative side effects and is better than being

exposed to harmful UV rays.
Regarding UVA-only beds there is really a need for only small amount of UVB exposure to stimulate the melanin production a bit, but not in the extreme amounts you receive in a conventional bed or even natural sunlight -- or even in UVA beds. Most conventional tanning beds are horrible for your skin, or when used excessively.
Over-usage of UVA beds can damage the skin as well. UVA penetrates deeper to affect the elastin fibers of your skin. There really is no safe tan except for a sunless one. I know it is higher maintenance and I know it doesn't look good, but if you want to have beautiful skin when you get in your late twenties and beyond, steer clear of the tanning beds.
